5 Smart Tips to Earn More Credit Card Rewards

If you recently signed up for a rewards credit card, you may have earned a sign-up bonus in the form of miles or reward points. While this can be a great way to earn rewards quickly, how do you keep the ball rolling and continue earning rewards? Let’s find out.

  • Using the right rewards card: If you have more than one credit card and your cards have different reward structures, make sure that you are using the right rewards card each time you make a purchase. For instance, one of your cards may offer you points for dining out, while another may offer you points for purchasing groceries. Ensure that you maximize your rewards earning potential by paying with the credit card that offers you the most rewards for a particular type of purchase.

  • Paying for more expenses with your credit card: While you may already be charging expenses to your credit card, it’s a good idea to think about what else you can pay for with your rewards card. So, while you may be paying for groceries, dining out, gas, etc., with your credit card, consider if you can also pay your insurance premium, monthly utility bills, or daycare expenses. Simply put, the more expenses you charge to your card, the more it increases your chances of earning rewards.

  • Earning a referral bonus: If you find that you’ve earned substantial rewards from a particular card, you should look into whether the credit card provider offers a referral bonus. Many credit card providers, including American Express, Chase, Citi, Capital One, and Discover offer referral bonuses to cardholders. If you know a friend or a family member who is looking to sign up for a credit card, you can refer them to your card and earn the bonus.

  • Adding a user to your credit card account: Check if your credit card provider offers you the option of adding another user to your credit card account. While you’ll still have to pay all the charges associated with your account, adding another user will allow you to earn additional rewards from their purchase, as well. Keep in mind that some providers will charge you a fee to add another user to your account.

  • Using Chase or Amex offers: American Express and Chase offer additional rewards when you make specific purchases, usually within a set period of time. You will, however, have to log into your credit card account and add the offers you are interested in your card before making the purchase.

Remember that your credit card has a substantial impact on your credit score. This is even more important if you are looking to take a mortgage or loan. Credit cards can also sometimes entice you to spend more than what you can afford. Ensure that you avoid doing this at all costs and pay off your balance each month. Keep in mind that penalty charges and a drop in your credit score can negate the value of the rewards you earn.
